Born in December 1972, in Brooklyn, Alyssa is a daughter of a fashion designer and talent manager. Her mother, Lin Milano, worked as a talent manager, while her father, Thomas M. Milano, is a film and music editor. Alyssa has Italian heritage, along with her brother Cory.
Alyssa grew up as a Roman Catholic. Young Milano started her career at the age of 7. At that point, her babysitter, without telling her parents, took her to an audition for one of the four parts in the national touring company of Annie. Among 1,500 girls, she made the cut. Alyssa took part in the tour and traveled the country for 18 months. Her mother accompanied her.
Following her return to New York, she started appearing in commercials and performed in off-Broadway productions. She played a role in the first American adaptation of Jane Eyre.
