Born in Memphis, Tennessee, she has Irish ancestry on her father’s side. She also has Scots-Irish ancestry on her mother’s side. Her family raised her in the Southern Baptist faith.

Doherty started her career in 1982 with guest roles in series Voyagers and Father Murphy. The same year, at the age of 11, she won the recurring role of Jenny Wilder on Little House on the Prairie. Michael Landon produced the show. She appeared in all but four episodes of the show.

In 1984, she appeared in an episode of Airwolf, an appearance that earned her a nomination as Best Young Actress.

Her first major movie role came in 1988 in the movie Heathers. She portrayed Heather Duke. And then in 1990, she achieved international stardom thanks to her appearance in Beverly Hills 90210. Shannen portrayed Brenda Walsh, a newcomer to Beverly Hills with her brother Brandon Walsh. In 1991 and 1992, she earned a Young Artist Award nomination.
