Attack on Titan is a Japanese manga and anime series set in a world where humanity lives inside cities surrounded by three enormous walls. The walls protect humanity from the gigantic man-eating humanoids referred to as Titans. The story follows Eren Yeager. He vows to exterminate the Titans after one of them brings destruction to his hometown. In Japanese anime, there are many shows like Attack on Titan.
Which are they? Before we get to other shows and series, let’s talk a bit more about Attack on Titan. The anime television series was produced by Wit Studio and MAPPA. As of January 2022, the streaming service Netflix has only the first season.
There are in total four seasons of Attack on Titan. The show has become a critical and commercial success. There are more than 100 million manga copies in print worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. The TV series is quite popular as well.

The TV show is set in the late 21st century in Japan, where boxers wear exoskeletons to fight. The narrative focuses on an underground fighter, Junk Dog. He decides to enter the boxing competition to defeat the champion, Yuri.
Junk Dog is given three months to achieve the goal of working his way to the top of the Megalobox rankings.
Captain Earth
This Japanese anime series was produced by Bones. In Japan, it was broadcast for 25 episodes on MBS from April to September in 2014.
The show follows high-school student Daichi Manatsu. He starts working for the Globe organization to pilot a giant robot that will protect Earth from invading alien forces.
The alien force intends to drain all the life force of mankind. Daichi and his robot Earth Engine Impacter try to stop them.
They start gathering allies and form the Midsummer’s Knights that will fight the alien forces Kill T-Gangs.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
The anime television series was broadcast for 12 episodes in 2016. You can stream it on the streaming platform Amazon Prime Instant Video service.
The show also spawned two compilation movies that premiered in Japanese theaters in December 2016 and January 2017.
The show is about a mysterious virus that appears during the Industrial Revolution. The virus transforms infected humans into corpses (Kabane) and rapidly spreads across humanity. Kabane are aggressive and undead creatures that cannot be defeated unless their glowing golden heart is pierced.
On the other side of the story, we have the young engineer Ikoma. He comes up with an anti-kabane weapon, called the piercing gun. Sadly, he is infected in the process but manages to resist and virus. He becomes a human-kabane hybrid that will try to exterminate the virus.
Kill la Kill
The Japanese anime series follows vagrant schoolgirl Ryuko Matoi on her search for her father’s killer. The search brings her into violent conflict with Satsuki Kiryuin, an iron-willed student, and her mother’s fashion empire.
Aniplex of America licensed the anime TV show for broadcast in North America.
Set in the Honnouji Academy, a fictional high school in Tokyo, Japan, the show follows the lives of students. All students wear Goku Uniform, a uniform that gives the wearer superhuman abilities.
One Piece
Stylized ONE PIECE, the Japanese anime series follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body gained the properties of rubber after eating a Devil Fruit. It is based on manga series of the same name.
Monkey and his crew of pirates, Straw Hat Pirates, explore the Grand Line searching for the ultimate treasure called “One Piece”. The one who finds it becomes the Next Pirate King.
In Japan, the series is among the top five animated TV shows in television ratings. Anime fans love it.
The live-action One Piece series will be a Netflix original series that will stream exclusively on the streaming platform.
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
The Japanese anime television series was adapted from the original Fullmetal Alchemist manga series. Funimation licensed the show in North America.
It follows the lives of brothers Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric. Their father was a noted and very gifted alchemist, who abandoned his family while the two brothers were young.
Edward and Alphonse traveled the world for their alchemist training. They tried to bring their mother back to life after coming home, but the human transmutation didn’t go as planned.
Attack On Titan Junior High
This story is a parody of the original Attack on Titan manga. That is why we have to put it on the list of shows like Attack on Titan. It features younger, chibi versions of the characters of the original show as they attend Class 1-04 at the Attack Junior High School.
The story focuses on their adventures during their first year at school.
Charlotte
The 2015 anime series aired for 13 episodes in Japan between July and September 2015. The story takes place in an alternate reality. There, a small percentage of children manifest superhuman abilities upon reaching puberty.
The main character is Yuu Otosaka, a high school boy who awakens his ability to temporarily possess others. That brings him to the attention of Nao Tomori, a student council president.
The show was praised for its unpredictability and evocative moments. At the same time, pacing and structure have been criticized as inefficient.
My Hero Academia

Bleach
The Japanese anime television series aired on TV Tokyo from October 2004 to March 2012. It is one of the longest-running Anime series of all time.
The story follows Ichigo Kurosaki and his adventures after he obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper. He is basically a death personification similar to the Grim Reaper.
His powers force him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures
The series is an anime adaptation of a manga series of the same name. There are five seasons in total. The last one began streaming worldwide on Netflix in December 2021. Since then, the show gained even more popularity.
Blue Exorcist
The show sets the stage for an interesting question, “What if you were the son of Satan”. What would you do? Would you fight for Satan or against him? It is a great show for any anime fan.
The show follows Rin Okumura, the main character. He chooses the latter answer, fighting against Satan.
Because of that, all hell is thrown in his direction and his friends. There is a lot of character development as Rin tries to fight his father and protect humanity.
Tokyo Ghoul
Speaking of shows like Attack on Titan, we have to mention Tokyo Ghoul. The main character is also a monster-human hybrid. But Ghouls, unlike titans, look like everyday people. They survive by eating human flesh. Ghouls have a lot of super-human powers and they go berserk when they are hungry.
Kaneki is the protagonist. He becomes half-ghoul due to a surgery where the ghoul’s organs were donated to his body. He now has to learn how to live with his new body.
The show was so popular, that it received a live-action and video game adaptation.
Demon Slayer
The show was aired as manga series from February 2016 to May 2020. In 2019, a 26-episode anime television series adaptation aired in Japan. The sequel movie Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba became the highest-grossing anime film of all time.
Goblin Slayer
Let’s finish off our list with Goblin Slayer. The show follows an inexperienced adventurer who is a priestess. She joins a bunch of guild members to do a contract job.
But everything goes wrong and every other member is killed. She is the only survivor because of a mysterious man who rescued her. He is the Goblin Slayer and adventurer who seeks to kill goblins.
